Miramonte Elementary Programs & Practices

In addition to our focus on English Language Development, Miramonte Elementary offers the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program, which prepares students for college and career readiness by teaching them essential academic and life skills.
Through AVID, students learn critical thinking, organization, collaboration, and communication skills that are essential for success in higher education and the workforce.

Capturing Kids' Hearts is a philosophy and program focused on building strong, positive relationships between school staff and the community they serve to foster a supportive and engaging learning environment.
At Miramonte, building strong, caring relationships with our students is at the heart of everything we do—and that’s why we use Capturing Kids’ Hearts throughout our campus. Each morning, you’ll see staff greeting students at the door with a warm smile, handshake, high five, or fist bump—whatever makes each child feel welcomed and seen. These small moments help set a positive tone for the day and remind students that they belong here.
In every classroom, we also take time for daily check-ins, where students and teachers connect, share, and build trust. This helps create a safe space where everyone feels heard and supported. One of the most important parts of Capturing Kids’ Hearts is the Social Contract. Early in the year, each class works together to create a shared agreement about how they want to treat each other, their teacher, and how they want to be treated in return.
It’s a powerful way to give students ownership of their classroom environment and build mutual respect. We believe that when we capture kids’ hearts, we also open their minds—and that’s when real learning happens. Thank you for partnering with us in creating a school community that feels safe, respectful, and full of heart.

At Miramonte Elementary, we understand that reading is the foundation of academic achievement and lifelong learning.
We prioritize literacy instruction across all grade levels, offering a comprehensive reading program that focuses on phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension strategies.
By instilling a love for reading and providing students with the skills and resources they need to become proficient readers, we empower them to succeed academically and pursue their passions.

One of our top priorities at Miramonte Elementary is English Language Development (ELD), ensuring that all students, including English Language Learners (ELLs), have the language skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.
Through targeted instruction and support, we empower students to become proficient in English and access rigorous academic content across all subject areas.

PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention Supports. It is a means to intentionally teach students school-wide and classroom expectations so that all students can learn how to:
- Identify and reflect on their own behaviors and emotions
- Communicate their needs effectively and respectfully with adults and each other
- Problem solve effectively
At Miramonte, we use PBIS to help teach and encourage behaviors that help students succeed both in and out of the classroom. You might hear your child talk about being one of the Miramonte STARS—that stands for being: Successful, Thoughtful, Accountable, Respectful, and Safe. These are the core values we teach, model, and celebrate across campus.
To recognize students who are showing STARS behavior, we hand out “Starsbucks”—our school currency! Students can save them up and spend them at our PBIS Store, which is open twice a month. Some students save up for fun prizes, while others use their Starbucks to join in on special events like dances, game days, or other fun school activities.
We also host monthly PBIS Character Assemblies, where we spotlight students who are going above and beyond in showing positive behavior. It’s a great time to come together as a school community, cheer each other on, and continue building our strong, respectful school culture.
We believe that by focusing on the good and recognizing positive choices, we help students grow into confident, kind, and responsible individuals—and we love partnering with you in this work!

Miramonte Elementary partners with the University of California, Irvine (UCI) to enhance our math curriculum through the UCI Math program.
Through this partnership, students engage in hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences that deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts and develop their problem-solving skills.
Our goal is to equip students with the mathematical proficiency they need to succeed in an increasingly complex world.
